The Dreaded Comparison Trap and How to Get Out

With our society the way that it is, let's face it.. its's easy to get a little caught up in comparing ourselves to everything and everyone.

And while I don't think these comparisons are the sole cause of eating disorders, I do feel that they play a key role in fueling them.

As you scroll through social media or flip through magazines, it can almost become second nature to think "her life is perfect", " I want her legs", or "If only I had her body."

It's one thing to use comparison as motivation I suppose, but likely that's not the case. I think the reality and danger of the situation is that these thoughts can all be triggers. All these small, fleeting things that you tell yourself all day build up and then before you know it, you're taking a couple steps backwards.

It's time for a little detox. And no I don't mean a low calorie juice cleanse.

I mean from social media or whatever it is that is causing you to feel worthless. Filter out your instagram feed from only showing thinspiration. Find some different idols with realistic body image instead. Are the trashy gossip magazines the problem? Don't buy them. It's not worth it. The risks will far outweigh the rest.

Ready for some harsh truth? There may be some things, in the course of your recovery, that you're going to have to give up in order to stay on a correct path. You may have to do without certain activities, people, and places — maybe temporarily, maybe forever. You have to find what fulfills you and what serves your pursuit of wellness. Because that's the goal right? To get on with your life without ED being a part of it.

Ultimately, it comes down to you.

Focus on YOUR health. On YOUR body. On YOUR life.

Easier said than done, I know, but recovery is worth it! Isn't it?
