With Earth Day last week, it felt like a good time to do a round up of some more sustainable kitchen favorites. If you’re hoping to be more sustainable in your home, it’s important to remember we don’t need to overhaul everything, just start with a few easy swaps that reduce waste and are simple to stick with. Bonus points that a lot of these things become more cost effective over time because you’re buying less of single use items. And great to support your meal plan and prepping experiences!
Here are some practical, more sustainable kitchen ideas:
Reusable silicone bags
Replace single-use plastic bags
Great for snacks, leftovers, and freezing food
Oftentimes they’re dishwasher and oven and long-lasting
Plastic wrap alternatives (like Saran Wrap swaps)
Try reusable lids or containers instead
Cut down on single-use plastic waste
Beeswax wraps
Reusable alternative to plastic wrap
Good for covering bowls or wrapping sandwiches
Washable and can be used many times
Cloth towels instead of paper towels
Use washable rags or “unpaper towels”
Reduces daily waste quickly
Glass or stainless steel containers and water bottles
Longer-lasting than plastic
Don’t stain or hold odors
Buy in bulk when accessible/affordable
Cuts down on packaging waste
Works well with reusable containers
Refillable cleaning products
Use refill stations or large containers
Reduces single-use plastic bottles
Compost food scraps
Keeps waste out of landfills (food waste can be a big struggle point for clients trying new foods so this can help bridge that gap!)
Creates nutrient-rich soil (if you garden)
